Edition screened: Included in Milestone 3-DVD set Mary Pickford: Rags & Riches Collection, released 2012. Scored and with English intertitles, no dialogue track. Runtime approximately 92 minutes.
Summary: Tormenting or imperiling domestic animals for comedic effect.
Details:
1) A long-haired cat - somehow, perhaps using a harness - is made to spring wildly around a room, 6:57-7:13. Afterwards, the cat clearly and appropriately is furious but still lets Mary Pickford cuddle him.
2) During the ‘wacky driving’ scene that is the low point in an otherwise excellent film, a rooster is grazed by Pickford’s speeding roadster. He is depicted as still standing after the encounter, but we see his cleanly chopped tail and wing feathers, ha-ha-ha-wooeeee, 6:57-7:13.
3) Ditto, a flock of geese, 9:33-9:40.
Fortunately, all of this Make America Abusive Again low-brow humor is crammed into the first ten minutes of the film, and we then are freed up to enjoy a splendid movie.
