C.H.U.D. was made during the heyday of predictable and pointless pet murdering. In most films these acts are a precursor to further terrorization of a family or person, but not even that flimsy rationale holds up in C.H.U.D. The pack of underground cannibalistic monsters is focused exclusively on eating people. They are not interested in menacing or terrorizing people. Why would they kill a woman’s dog and hang it in her basement? Because that’s what happens in movies from the 1980s.
