Details: At 1:02:15 cult leader Patrick enters a wooded area carrying a burlap sack and we hear a cat growling slightly. He puts the sack down and we do not see it again, but hear discussion of shooting the two cats in the sack and we witness the gun fire. Over at 1:03:50.
This developmental sequence is handled as intelligently as it could be. There is no wriggling in the sack, no real indication that it contains anything at all, no bullet impacts on the sack, and no cries when the animals are shot. The averagely inattentive viewer would realize neither what was happening nor being discussed.
