Details: We see a rooster being decapitated and thrashing headlessly on the ground from 37:54-38:42. The actual decapitation is shown in close-up, and the whole scene is bloody and very real.
The slaughter is significant to the plot of the film, but that significance is explained adequately by dialogue elsewhere and the scene itself can be skipped without ruining this smart movie. The decapitation scene comes abruptly and with no warning. It is cued by Juliette Binoche at a cocktail part, wearing a white dress and talking on the phone, “Yes, I’ll tell him. I love you too.” . . . Wham!!
