The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition

The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition. George Butler, 2000.
😸
Edition screened: Sony DVD, released 2003. English language. Runtime approximately 97 minutes.

Summary: No visual depictions of violence toward animals.

This film documents Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 attempt to lead the first expedition across the Antarctic continent. The 2000 production contains period footage made by Shackleton’s filmographer, who captured the affection between the explorers and the animals who accompanied them. The antique scenes of smiling sailers with their huskies are a treat.

This was a brutal experience, and presumably few if any of the animals survived. The narration by Liam Neeson probably makes mention of animals’ fates, but there are no depictions of death or killing of domesticated or native animals. This film is an enjoyable and gripping memorial to these men and their animal companions.
