Fando y Lis

Fando y Lis. Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1968.
😿😿
Edition screened: Included in Anchor Bay 4-DVD/2-CD set The Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky, released 2007. Spanish language with English subtitles. Runtime approximately 96 minutes.

Summary: Brief depictions of cruelty and inappropriate handling.

Details:
1) At 3:30, a brief depiction of a spider impaled on a skewer and ignited. This scene is visually and conceptually unclear, and not graphic. Fando is playing with toys such as plastic soldiers, and it is unclear if this plastic-looking ‘spider’ is meant to be a toy or a real deceased spider. Black-and white film stock and soft focus combine to make the depiction additionally vague. The image is repeated at least once again in the film, with about the same effect.
2) A pile of old bleached horse skulls at 46:20. Not a big deal visually or thematically.
3) At 01:33:30 is a grave with many tiny snakes crawling on the cover stone. A man plucks them off and flicks them aside in a way that isn’t intentionally cruel, but is careless and rough.

Jodorowsky’s name on the product might beg over scrutinization in this case. Fando y Lis is visually interesting and not really problematic, possible spider burning aside.
