Edition screened: Criterion DVD #459, released 2009. Spanish language with English subtitles. Runtime approximately 93 minutes.
Summary: Mild indications of animal slaughter.
Details:
1) A well-dressed woman at a music recital opens her clutch bag to get a handkerchief, exposing goose feet and feathers within, 14:53-15:00.
2) At 1:09:43 begins a 10-second image of domestic disarray and rubble that includes a discarded lamb’s body. It’s not particularly easy to discern what is being shown.
3) An abbreviated and intentionally silly Kabbalist ritual is performed with the goose feat and feather from the woman’s handbag, in two short sequences 1:11:05-1:12:04.
Nothing visually upsetting or psychologically disturbing here. This is another Buñuel that provides dependable and satisfyingly obscure source material for other filmmakers.
